This year, we are proud to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the European Day of Languages (EDLangs)!
This special day, celebrated annually on September 26, honors the linguistic diversity of Europe and promotes multilingualism and intercultural understanding.
Since its inception, the European Day of Languages has been an initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission, and it highlights the incredible wealth of languages that bring us closer to understanding each otherâs cultures.
Did you know that in Europe alone:
- 24 official languages are spoken within the European Union! đȘđș
- There are over 60 regional and minority languages such as Basque, Breton, Sorbian, and Sami.
- More than 225 languages are recognized by the Council of Europe, showcasing the true diversity of the continent!
- And, languages like Arabic and Urdu add even more richness to Europeâs multilingual landscape!
Language learning is not just about memorizing vocabulary or grammar rulesâitâs about truly immersing yourself in the culture and nuances of another world. đ That’s why, during our English lessons this week, our students discussed the importance of idiomatic expressions in mastering a foreign language. Idioms are more than just quirky phrasesâtheyâre keys to understanding a languageâs heart and soul.

To raise awareness of multilingualism within our school community, we invited students to share their favorite idiomatic expressions from their native languages. We were blown away by the diversity of expressions shared, and it was a great reminder of the richness that different languages bring to our community.
We sometimes forget how many languages are spoken by our students, but on this European Day of Languages, weâre proud to celebrate this linguistic wealth. Every language is truly a window into a different cultureâand today, we embrace this diversity. đ
So, what languages do YOU speak? Which idiomatic expressions do you love? Share them with us and letâs continue to celebrate our multilingual community!
